Post-Baccalaureate in Classical Languages

Offered through the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the post-baccalaureate certificate program is designed to help you reach and exceed advanced levels in Greek and Latin in order to prepare you for graduate study in the various fields of classics. This program is ideal for

  • Students who came to classics late in their undergraduate careers who need additional language courses to prepare them for advanced degrees in classics
  • Current graduate students in related fields (e.g., religion, philosophy, art history, linguistics, comparative literature) who wish to increase their knowledge of classical languages
  • Secondary school teachers who wish to deepen their knowledge of classical languages and enhance their credentials

The post-baccalaureate certificate program is offered completely online to offer you more flexibility than the traditional, face-to-face classroom experience allows. All courses are taught online asynchronously to allow students maximum flexibility to complete their assignments; all materials are available online.


The University of Georgia is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award baccalaureate, masters, specialist, and doctoral degrees. Tuition and fees are subject to change. Tuition is the same regardless of residency. Current tuition and fees are available on the Office of the Registrar website. If you register for less than 5 credit hours, student fees are reduced to $372 in that semester.

Admission Requirements

Students who are not currently enrolled at UGA should apply for post-baccalaureate admission to UGA.  Requirements are based on UGA's Undergraduate admissions standards. The Classics Department also requires a supplemental application, a statement of purpose and two letters of recommendation.

No SAT, ACT, or GRE scores are required for post-baccalaureate applicants.

Application Check List

  1. UGA Post-Baccalaureate Student Application (UGA Undergraduate Admissions) – Post-Baccalaureate students must apply for admission to UGA through UGA's Undergraduate Admissions. Non-Refundable Application Fee: $60.
  2. Classics Department Post-Baccalaureate Supplemental Application – Complete form and e-mail as pdf attachment to gradinq@uga.edu.
  3. Official Transcripts – Submit two sets of official transcript(s) from all colleges or universities.  Submit one set to UGA and one set to the Classics Department.
  4. Statement of Purpose – Submit to the Classics Department.
  5. Letters of Recommendation – Submit two letters of recommendation from people familiar with your background to the Classics Department.
  6. International Applicants must also submit TOEFL or IELTS scores to UGA.

Program Structure

To obtain the certificate, students must successfully complete a year of intensive study in the classical languages, maintaining a B average in the program. The curriculum comprises five courses (13 credit hours) over the course of two semesters.
