Master of Natural Resources (M.N.R)
Master of Natural Resources (M.N.R)

There is so much wonderful, impactful research happening at Warnell, and I’m eager to work with those in and around the school to drive data-driven outreach and land management decisions in Georgia and beyond.
Assistant Outreach Professor of Natural Resources Science Communication
Overview
The University of Georgia’s fully online Master of Natural Resources (M.N.R.), offered by the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, is designed for professionals who want advanced training in natural resources management, conservation, and related fields, or who are looking to transition into work that extends beyond a traditional office setting. This non-thesis, terminal degree emphasizes applied learning and faculty mentorship. The program requires a minimum of 33 graduate credit hours and can be completed in as little as six semesters.
Students use the M.N.R. to build practical expertise, strengthen decision-making skills, and prepare for leadership roles across public agencies, nonprofits, consulting, and natural resource–based industries.
Graduates work across a wide range of settings where science, policy, land use, and resource stewardship intersect. Career paths often include roles in government agencies, environmental organizations, conservation groups, consulting firms, and private industry.
What jobs can I get with a master’s in natural resources?
- Natural resource or environmental managers
- Conservation or land-use specialists
- Environmental planners or policy analysts
- Program coordinators for nonprofit or public agencies
- Professionals working in forestry, wildlife, water, or land management
Who is the M.N.R. program designed for?
This program is well suited for working professionals in natural resources or environmental fields who want to advance their careers, as well as individuals looking to pivot into natural resource–focused work. It’s also a strong option for students who want graduate-level training without pursuing a research thesis.
What will I study in the Master of Natural Resources program?
The M.N.R. curriculum focuses on applied, career-relevant coursework. All students complete a required capstone project in natural resources, which serves as a hands-on, culminating experience.
Beyond the capstone, students choose courses that match their interests, with options in areas such as renewable resources policy, natural resources management, wildlife habitat management, GIS applications, statistical software, human dimensions of conservation, and scientific communication.
Students also take courses outside their primary focus area and electives, allowing them to build both depth and breadth while tailoring the degree to their professional goals.
Is the Master of Natural Resources degree fully online?
Yes. The M.N.R. is offered fully online, allowing students to complete coursework while continuing to work or manage other responsibilities.
Does the M.N.R. require a thesis?
No. This is a non-thesis degree. The program focuses on coursework and applied learning rather than original research.
How many credit hours are required?
The program requires a minimum of 33 semester hours of graduate-level coursework.
How long does it take to complete the program?
Students can complete the degree in as little as six semesters. Many choose a part-time pace that fits alongside full-time work.
Do students receive advising or mentorship?
Yes. Each student works with a major professor who serves as both a mentor and the chair of the student’s advisory committee. This faculty relationship helps guide course selection and align the program with professional goals.
Is this degree considered a terminal degree?
Yes. The Master of Natural Resources is a terminal degree, intended for professional practice rather than preparation for a Ph.D. program.
How is the M.N.R. different from a research-based natural resources master’s degree?
The M.N.R. emphasizes applied skills, professional development, and mentorship instead of research and thesis work. It’s designed for students who want practical training they can immediately apply in their careers.
Why choose UGA’s online Master of Natural Resources?
UGA’s M.N.R. combines the flexibility of online learning with close faculty mentorship and a curriculum grounded in real-world application. Courses are taught by UGA faculty, and online students receive the same academic support and resources as on-campus graduate students, while preparing for impactful work in natural resources and environmental fields.
