Today is the last day of February, which has been designated Back History Month, and has been a period of time to celebrate black history and diversity across the nation. The University of Georgia honored Black History Month 2019 with a variety of activities and events across campus that paid homage to black history month.

Each program was listed on a website that was maintained by the Multicultural Services and Affairs department within student services. The month was filled with a variety of events that ranged from a satirical one act performance of “Dear Black People” to a Black History Month book club. Guest speakers and alumni spotlights were also highlighted across campus, including a theme delivered by career journalist and anchor Monica Pearson (MA ‘14).  Several student organizations were involved in planning or putting on certain events throughout the month. The Black Theatrical Ensemble put on several performances and also connected with campus through social media campaigns. The UGA chapter of NAACP also put on several activities and panels throughout the month of February in the The Intersection, an on campus community center focused on social justice, and at the local Boys and Girls Club.

The final event was on Tuesday Feb. 26. The UGA NAACP chapter, in collaboration with University Union, screened the film “The Hate U Give.” After the showing there was a facilitated dialogue led by campus leaders that discussed class, race, and privilege.

The myriad celebrations resulted in creating meaningful dialogues on the subjects of race, culture, and history both in the United States and at the University of Georgia.
