June: Pride Month at UGA

June is LGBTQA Pride Month, celebrated to honor the 1969 Stonewall Manhattan riots. All over the world, celebrations of pride are held throughout the month, as well as memorials to those lost from hate crimes.

The University of Georgia is no exception. In 2015, the University of Georgia founded the LGBT Resource Center to provide students with a safe and inclusive space of self-discovery. The LGBT Resource Center’s mission focuses on a commitment to an intersectional social justice framework, leadership development, and equity.

There are many resources available for all University of Georgia students, inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. In 1992, the Athens Gay and Lesbian Association became the Lambda Alliance, which addresses relevant LGBT issues through awareness opportunities. In 2002, Safe Space began to hold training sessions throughout the year to discuss gender appreciation and LGBT laws.

In 2014, the LGBT Resource Center Ambassador Program was introduced to provide outreach within the Athens community. Prism was also founded this year (sponsored by Multicultural Services and Programs) to address LGBT people of color.

In 2015, Ignite was founded (sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs). This is a retreat focusing on social justice and the progress of the LGBT Resource Center. This year, the student-run radio show “Queeries” was also created.

Regardless if you plan to graduate in May, August, or December, or from online or traditional classes, you are eligible to participate in the University of Georgia’s Lavender Graduation. This is a ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of LGBTQ and student allies.
