International Biomedical Regulatory Sciences: College of Pharmacy Launches a New Institute
The University of Georgia College of Pharmacy has broken new ground with its launch of the Institute for International Biomedical Regulatory Sciences, an organization which will address the various challenges and opportunities created by biomedical advancements in regulatory science. The primary objective of the institute is the safe implementation of biomedical products, including pharmaceuticals, vaccines, medical devices, biologics, and other health products. Collaborative partnerships, integrative research, education, training and outreach are central to this objective. As the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries continue to rapidly expand, specialized and convenient education of regulatory affairs is crucial for professionals to ensure regulatory compliance.
Michael Bartlett, founding director of the new institute and associate dean for science education, research and technology at the College of Pharmacy, states: “This institute will be a perfect amalgamation between industry, government and academia, and will offer valuable opportunities to students, researchers and professionals in this important field.”
Participating faculty members come from the College of Pharmacy, College of Public Health, College of Veterinary Medicine, Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Engineering, allowing for a wide range of educational programs geared toward workforce development. Students have the opportunity to earn both graduate certificates and Master of Science degrees through web-based graduate level courses. Students from other full-time degree programs may also enroll in classes offered by the institute.
The institute will also sponsor two conferences per year in partnership with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. UGA’s main campus will host The International Good Manufacturing Practices Conference, and The Medical Device Regulations Conference will take place at UGA Gwinnett campus in Lawrenceville. These conferences will provide attendees with excellent networking opportunities as well as academic and continuing education credits.
