In Gainesville, Georgia, the “Poultry Capital of the World,” protecting the health of commercial poultry is critical. A partnership between the University of Georgia and Merck Animal Health exemplifies this commitment, combining cutting-edge research and educational opportunities to enhance poultry health and safety.

“Students participate very closely in the research and get training in an area that doesn’t have very many opportunities outside of institutions like Merck and UGA,” said Dr. Holly Sellers, a professor at UGA’s College of Veterinary Medicine‘s Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center (PDRC) and a key collaborator in the partnership.

Sellers, a distinguished researcher who was named UGA’s 2019 Inventor of the Year, focuses on diagnosing and researching viruses and diseases affecting commercial poultry, such as avian influenza. Her work not only protects the state’s poultry industry but also supports global food security.

“The research we do improves the health and safety of poultry, which in turn contributes significantly to feeding the world’s population,” said Sellers. “Whether we are developing vaccines that can prevent or reduce diseases or improving methods for applying vaccination, healthier birds contribute significantly to safe, affordable protein.”

Sellers emphasizes experiential learning opportunities for students, who participate in the entire vaccine development process—from research and diagnostics to navigating regulatory approval. “They see the research side, of course, but then they also see how governmental regulatory bodies use our research and the vaccines that Merck produces from that research to then go through the process of getting that vaccine approved and licensed for sale,” Sellers explained.

Through her teaching and research, Sellers also contributes to UGA’s online Master of Avian Health and Medicine program and the online Graduate Certificate in Avian Health and Medicine. These programs extend her impact, preparing students worldwide to tackle pressing challenges in poultry health.

The collaboration between UGA and Merck benefits both institutions, fostering innovation and delivering solutions that strengthen Georgia’s poultry industry and feed the global population.
