Spotlight on Culture: Visit the Georgia Museum of Art and the Georgia Botanical Gardens

Online students, we know that you’re busy during the year, since most of you are juggling a career, school and family, among other things. But, in light of the perfect weather that we’ve been enjoying in Athens, it’s only appropriate that we highlight two of Athens’ cultural hubs: the Georgia Museum of Art and the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. If you get a chance this summer, bring the family to Athens over any given weekend or on a weekday when the chance presents itself. Here’s some information about the two locations, as well as some really cool events going on this summer.

University museum of the University of Georgia, as well as the official state museum of Georgia, the tasteful Georgia Museum of Art underwent an extensive renovation recently. It offers programming that caters to all audiences, and free admission for all exhibitions. Traveling exhibits change out constantly, featuring a wide variety of artwork and pieces. The museum also boasts thirteen permanent exhibits.

Tour at Two: Highlights from the Permanent Collection

Every Wednesday from 2-3 p.m., the docents lead a tour that highlights parts of the permanent collection of art at the museum.

June 20 (Saturday)- Family Day: Printmaking Workshop

Examine gorgeous examples of Mexican printmaking in the exhibition “El Taller de Gráfica Popular: Vida y Arte” and create a print of your own with help from Double Dutch Press and students of UGA’s printmaking and book arts department from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. 

July 17 (Friday)- 90 Carlton: Summer

From 5:30-8:30 p.m., enjoy light refreshments by Epting Events, gallery activities, door prizes and “Ask the Experts.” Free (members) / $5 (non-members). Join at the event for complimentary admission. Call 706.542.4662 for more details. RSVP to gmoarsvp@uga.edu or 706.542.4199.

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is a 313-acre pre­serve set aside by the University of Georgia in 1968 for the study and enjoyment of plants and nature. It is a living laboratory offering a number of theme gar­dens and collections, over five miles of nature trails, and four major facilities including a tropical conservatory. Audiences to the garden may enjoy the ornamental gar­dens, stroll along the trails, take one of their many educational pro­grams or attend one of their many events.

June 2 (Tuesday)- June Sunflower Concert: Caroline Aiken

A part of the Sunflower Concert Series, which features a different musical group every month from June to September, you may pay $15 to attend this concert. It goes on from 7-9 p.m. and attendees are encouraged to bring picnic blankets and dinners. Beverages and light snacks are included with admission.

June 20 (Saturday)- North Georgia Daylily Show

A free show featuring over a hundred different beautiful daylilies. In addition to viewing the flowers, visitors may also participate in a bargain plant sale, get information on daylilies and exchange information with other daylily enthusiasts. From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 

July 31 (Friday)- Blue Moon Full Moon Hike

Come see the garden come alive at night! Each hike will focus on a different topic such as the moon, constellations, or nocturnal creatures. Bring family and friends of all ages along to enjoy the mysterious world of nature at night! Starts at 8 p.m. and costs $5 for individuals, or $15 for a family.
