It Gets Easier! Some Useful Library Tips for Online Students

As a reference librarian, I’ve been supporting distance learning students for more than 10 years, so I understand how challenging it can be to do research without easy physical access to libraries. But you don’t need to come to campus to get help; librarians are ready to answer your questions and help you acquire research materials by phone call, chat, text or email. The UGA library’s distance learning web page describes the range of services available to you. The following tips will help you take full advantage of these services.
1) Before your classes begin, make sure that you have your Athena student number including its prefix – your full 16-digit MyID number. You’ll need this for a variety of library transactions. This is the same number that appears under your barcode on your ID card. If you are using your MyID number to access online library resources and get an error message indicating you are not authorized, call Access Services at (706) 542-3256 or email maincirc@uga.edu to ensure your current registration status is recognized correctly by library systems.
2) As a result of recent technical upgrades, it is no longer necessary to find and use the current GALILEO password in order to access UGA GALILEO databases. Now you have the option of using your UGA MyID for authentication.
3) When you receive reading lists for your classes, we may be able to help you find your materials. While the library does not purchase textbooks for students, we may have some of your required readings in our collection. Call us at (706) 542-3251; we’ll check for you. If the UGA Libraries have a journal in print form that is not available online, often we can scan the article you need and send it to you as an email attachment. This service is for currently enrolled students and is primarily for journal articles, but we can scan book chapters for you as well. Use this Delivery Request form to ask for scanned copies of materials.
Please feel free to contact me for help. My colleagues and I look forward to hearing from you!
