It’s Never Too Late to Go Back to College
Firefighter, Dusty McHenry needed to complete his degree and the search for online programs proved overwhelming. When he found out he could finish what he started 10 years ago at the University of Georgia, his search was over.
Ten years. That’s how long it has been since Dusty McHenry had enrolled in a college course at the University of Georgia. During that time, he began a career as a firefighter, married the love of his life, and had a daughter. Needless to say, Dusty had a lot on his plate when he decided to return to school. But he knew the decision was worth it.
By returning to school Dusty could finish what he started, broaden his career opportunities, and achieve the work-life balance he so desperately craved. He was thrilled when he discovered that he could do all three through UGA’s BBA online degree completion program.
Now a husband and father, the 24-hour hour shifts at the fire station are pretty demanding and often prevent him from spending time with his family: “I love working for the fire department, but I want to be able to provide a lifestyle for my family that the fire department is unable to afford me…I want to be home with my family, sleep in my bed every night, and ideally make more money.”
Ten years later, Dusty’s life goals and priorities have changed since he decided to leave UGA many years ago; he understands the reality of how a degree can positively impact his work and home life.
But returning to school is not an easy task. Dusty says intentionally budgeting his time proves to be his biggest challenge. Fortunately, the flexibility of the 100% online business classes allows Dusty to tackle school work whether at the fire station or at home, late at night or early in the morning.
Such effort and dedication seems to be paying off, though, because Dusty was delighted to report that he earned all A’s and B’s his first semester back at UGA. He’s also enjoying the challenge of making connections between his course work and his professional opportunities and goals. This summer’s Operations Management course allowed him to get a feel for management in both corporate and response-driven environments, like the fire house.
When asked if he has any specific plans set for after graduation, Dusty says he’s not entirely sure yet; but with a UGA diploma in his hand and his family by side, his opportunities seem wide open.
