Tips for Teachers: Back to School

Teachers! Are you ready for the upcoming school year? Whether you are a brand new teacher, a veteran, or a current teacher working on a Master degree while working; a new school year can be intimidating. So, here are some tips to help you get prepared and excited for the 2019-2020 academic year!

  1. Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone: Don’t be afraid to try something new this year! This could be as simple as changing up a bulletin board design, or as drastic as flipping your entire classroom. The end goal is the same: shake up a tired routine and freshen up your classroom and attitude.
  2. Get Organized: This is a crucial step as the first day of school looms ever closer in the final weeks of summer. When your classroom is organized it is more efficient and a smoother transition for you and the upcoming new class. Plan ahead and learn from past mistakes in order to optimize organization.

  3. Be Positive: This should go without saying, but having a good attitude for a new school year is infectious. If you lead by example and start the year with a big smile on your face you are sure to see several smiling back at you, even during some of the harder subjects.

  4. Collaborate: Teamwork does in fact make the dream work. Explore how you can collaborate with other teachers, administration, or other schools (such as a middle school – elementary school mentoring program) in order to create new ways of learning for your students. This also helps teachers learn from each other, and that is going to improve the entire system of education from top to bottom.

  5. Have Fun: This is one of the most important bits of advice for teachers at any career stage! Do not forget the reason why you wanted to become and educator and the passion for innovative learning that helps create a fun learning environment. Relax a little and remember that you can, when appropriate, laugh with your students. Embrace the challenges and rewards of a new school year and it is bound to be fun!

As the new school year begins remember that you can always keep learning! You can find out more information about various UGA’s online M.Ed degrees by going to the Online Learning website.
