Each year, Georgia Bio recognizes achievement and honors excellence in the life sciences industry in Georgia, and for the second year in a row, the University of Georgia was recognized at their annual Golden Helix Awards. This year, UGA’s Poultry Diagnostic & Research Center received the Georgia Bio Community Award. 

The Community Award recognizes individuals, companies or institutions for significant contributions to Georgia’s life sciences industry and is awarded to 3-5 entities and selected by the GaBio Awards Committee.

UGA’s Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center’s (PDRC) Diagnostic Services, has earned this award by providing further advancements in education to the nation’s leading poultry experts. They are serving the poultry industry worldwide by providing testing and technical assistance, developing new methodologies, procedures, and technologies, and providing clinicians for diagnostic purposes. 

The PDRC features distinguished professors like Holly Sellers who was recently named UGA’s 2019 Inventor of the Year. Her research has led to 12 invention disclosures and five patents. Dr. Sellers is also an online professor for UGA’s online Master of Avian Health and Medicine. She has devoted her entire career to poultry science, and her dedication to this field has led to four commercial poultry vaccines among other autogenous vaccines that support Georgia’s $22 billion poultry industry.  

Offered fully online, the avian health program is offered as a Master’s degree or a graduate certificate for students. These unique online programs are for practicing veterinarians interested in being recognized health experts in the rapidly growing international poultry industry.
