The University of Georgia’s online Master of Education in Reading Education program was recently ranked the third best online Master in Reading degree program by TheBestSchools.org, an online resource for information on campus and online education.

UGA’s Reading Ed program is offered through the College of Education and has a focus in New and Digital Literacies. The degree program is designed for certified teachers and literacy education professionals in order to educate them in ways that advance their students as readers of everything from printed materials to digital multimedia environments.

A graduate degree in reading education can prepare you to help students improve their own literacy – a foundation for educational success in all content areas. The degree can help teachers and specialists exercise greater leadership in literacy education in schools and similar educational organizations.

“From the printed word to online venues, new literacies and popular media provide numerous opportunities to reach out to learners of all ages,” says Professor Donna Alvermann. “My most cherished moments in teaching involve seeing former students graduate and go forth into the world with the knowledge and skills to help others learn.”

TheBestSchools used programs’ demonstrated quality, types of courses provided, faculty strength, as well as school awards, rankings, and reputation in order to compile their list of the 25 best online Reading Ed programs.

The need for teachers proficient in Reading Education is real and the value of literacy for our children is undeniable. There is demand across the country for highly qualified educators. The University of Georgia is addressing this need by offering high quality online graduate degrees in education.

UGA’s graduate education programs have been recognized by several other ranking organizations this year. Released in January, a survey conducted by US News and World Report ranked the University of Georgia as the sixth best graduate online education program (tied with the University at Albany-SUNY).

The fall deadline to apply to the Reading Ed program is June 30.
