Overview

Master of Education in Reading Education

Offered through the College of Education, the University of Georgia's online M.Ed. in Reading Education with an Emphasis in New and Digital Literacies is designed for certified teachers and literacy education professionals. This degree program is offered by the Language and Literacy Education Department, whose faculty is recognized nationally and internationally for their teaching and research. The goal of the program is to educate teachers in ways that advance their students as readers in the broadest sense from printed materials to digital multimedia environments. This M.Ed. is appropriate for teachers working with students from Pre-kindergarten through grade twelve.

College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

Tuition and fees are subject to change. Tuition is the same regardless of residency. Current tuition and fees are available on the Bursar's Office website. If you register for less than 5 credit hours, student fees are reduced to $366 in that semester.

Maximum Hours Transferable into Program:  9 (transfer courses must align with courses in the program of study)

Admission Requirements

Students applying to The University of Georgia must be accepted by the Graduate School. Persons holding a bachelor's degree from any institution accredited by the proper regional accrediting association are eligible to apply for admission to the Graduate School. The graduate school will accept scores as valid for 5 years, until September 15 following the 5th anniversary of the testing date. Otherwise, applicants must take one of the tests again.

Applications are evaluated holistically, and recommendations for admission are based on an applicant's qualifications, letters of recommendations, statement, and how these match with faculty interests, and the program's capacity. All materials submitted as part of an application are considered and evaluated by the faculty within the program.

  • A strong undergraduate GPA with usual acceptance being 3.0 or higher.
  • A strong Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score of 295 for GRE tests taken after August 2011. An MAT score of 402 will also be considered.
  • At least two years teaching experience, although candidates with less that two years experience will be considered.
  • Students must demonstrate easy and consistent access to a personal computer, a high-speed Internet connection, and an email account before entering the program. This accessibility will be demonstrated through online communication with the program coordinator.

Application Checklist

  1. Application – Submit the Graduate School application online.
  2. Test Scores – Send recent official entrance test scores (less than five years old) to the graduate school. UGA institutional code for ETS reporting: 5813  
    1. GRE or Miller Analogy Test (MAT)
    2. International applicants must also submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.
  3. Statement of Purpose – Submit online to the graduate school.  A statement of purpose should clarify the candidate’s relevant background, interests, and goals, and indicate their intent for the online program in their statement.
  4. Letters of Recommendation – Submit three letters of recommendation online to the graduate school. Letters should be from individuals who can evaluate the applicant’s scholarly ability and potential for success in a graduate program. Preferably at least two of them are from faculty who have instructed the applicant in a previous program of study.
  5. Résumé or curriculum vita – Submit online to the graduate school.
  6. Official Transcripts – Send an official copy to the graduate school.

Curriculum

Program Structure

This fully online degree program operates on a cohort model with a special focus on New and Digital Literacies. Students will take a minimum 36 credit hours in a 12-course sequence that provides a strong core understanding of research-based literacy instruction, cultural and historical foundations, and research.  This core is augmented by four specialization courses focused on new and digital literacies.  When students follow the required sequence, the program can be completed in two years.

Students interested in the Georgia Reading Endorsement can review the endorsement course sequence to make sure they include those courses in their electives.

Up to two courses could be substituted upon consultation and agreement with your advisor, with the exception of LLED 6010e and LLED7940e

Course Sequence

Core Courses (6 credit hours)

LLED 6010e Survey of Reading Instruction Pre-K through Grade 12 - Principles and practices in preschool through secondary reading instruction. An overview of the methods, principles, and practices of teaching reading. This is a reading endorsement course.

 LLED 6020e Practicum in Reading Instruction and Assessment (Clinic) - Formal and informal assessments, instructional procedures, and materials for children experiencing reading difficulties. This is a reading endorsement course. Tutoring is a requirement.

Specialization Courses (9 credit hours)

LLED 7110e Integrating Digital Resources in the Literacy Classroom - Integration of computers into instruction to enhance literacy in elementary through secondary schools.

LLED 7910e New Literacies - This course provides an overview of the ambiguities and tensions created by a current move from the long established autonomous model of “reading” to the “New Literacy Studies” (NLS). It also addresses the implications of NLS for teaching students to comprehend a wide range of texts.

LLED 8330e Popular Culture in Literacy Classrooms K-12 - Examination of how schools and institutions of higher education should respond to popular culture especially in terms of literacy teaching and learning.

Electives (18 credit hours)

LLED 6420e Literacy Development and Instruction in Early Childhood - Emergent literacy development of preschool through grade three children; theory and research relevant to instructional approaches and practice. This is a reading endorsement course for elementary teachers.

LLED 6060e Content Area Literacies - Theory and instructional strategies for enhancing reading, writing, speaking, and listening across various subjects in the school curriculum for grades 4-12. This is a reading endorsement course for middle and high school teachers.

LLED 8340e The History of Teaching Methods for Literacy Learning in the United States - 
A historical examination of literacy education from colonial America to the present.

LLED 7070e Research Methods in Language Education - Research methods appropriate for studying language teaching and learning.

LLED 7930e, Culture and Literacy Classrooms - This course explores the ways culture transacts with teaching and learning in literacy classrooms.

LLED 7920e Assessing Literacy Materials and Programs - 
The exploration and development of criteria to evaluate and select materials and programs for use in the classroom.

Capstone course (3 credit hours)

LLED 7940e Electronic Assessment in Literacy Classrooms - Explores why and how to effectively use print-based and technological approaches to integrating electronic portfolio assessment into the literacy K-12 curriculum.

FINAL EXAMINATION - The examination format is a multi-modal composition with the student’s choice of online or software platform (e.g., wiki, blog, presentation), design (e.g., graphics, images, audio, video).  Download the M.Ed. Reading Education Final Exam Policy .pdf for additional details.

Recent Reading Ed Alumna Josie Calamari Shows Dedication to Education

Just days before giving birth to twins, Josie Calamari turned in her final exam. Two days after their birth, she received the email confirming she had successfully earned her Master of Education in Reading Education online. “It was like the best week of my life! Babies and my Master’s degree!” Calamari said with a laugh.

UGA Online Reading Ed Professor Appointed to Literacy Research Panel

Donna Alvermann, professor in the online Master of Education in Reading Education program, has been appointed to the International Literacy Association's (ILA) Literacy Research Panel (LRP) for a three-year term. She will also start her two-year appointment as the "Policy and Practice: Remix" columnist for the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy.

UGA Nationally Reaffirmed as a Top Military School

Once again, the University of Georgia has been nationally reaffirmed in 2016 as Military Friendly, Best for Vets and a Top Military College/University. Since the establishment of the Student Veterans Resource Center (SVRC) in the spring of 2013, UGA has made significant progress in connecting student veterans to one another, as well as to campus and community resources. UGA continues to maintain active affiliation with both the Student Veterans of America and the Got Your Six campaign, where faculty and staff attend a training session to become certified as veteran-friendly.

Quality Matters is a faculty-centered, peer review process intended to promote the design and development of quality online courses, and the Applying the Quality Matters Rubric workshop introduces course designers to these standards.

I want to begin by saying that I love teaching online. I’ve done it for over 10 years and I could not imagine my teaching any other way – teaching online has forced me to face many realities and grow in my teaching practice. People are often surprised by my enthusiasm. Colleagues ask me if teaching online is the same as teaching face-to-face (which I’ve also taught).
