Xiaoming Zhai publishes book on AI in STEM education
Xiaoming Zhai, an associate professor in the Mary Frances Early College of Education and a faculty member in the Online Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Science Education program, has co-edited a groundbreaking book on artificial intelligence (AI) in STEM education.
The book, Uses of Artificial Intelligence in STEM Education (Oxford University Press, 2024), highlights interdisciplinary research on integrating AI into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education.
Zhai, who also directs the AI4STEM Education Center at the University of Georgia, co-edited the book with Joseph Krajcik of Michigan State University. Featuring contributions from 65 global experts, the book explores topics such as ethical and inclusive uses of AI in STEM, AI-based scientific inquiry, and AI application design.
“This milestone book is a collaborative effort that encapsulates the groundbreaking work of 65 experts from around the globe,” said Zhai.
Uses of Artificial Intelligence in STEM Education is part of Zhai’s broader efforts to advance the role of AI in education. At UGA, he directs the $10 million National Center on Generative AI for Uplifting STEM+C Education (GENIUS Center), which focuses on developing AI-based innovations for STEM education. He has also co-founded a research group on AI in science education and chaired international conferences addressing AI’s impact in STEM learning environments. His leadership in these initiatives directly informs his teaching in the online M.Ed. program, ensuring educators gain access to the latest research and practical tools in AI-enhanced STEM education.
“This book helps the field to establish a new and solid interdisciplinary research area,” Zhai said.
