I am passionate about supporting diverse communicators, including those who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), and partnering with families, educators, and interdisciplinary teams to create inclusive, supportive environments.

Laura Nichols

Clinical Associate Professor

What has drawn me most to the field of speech-language pathology is its strong scientific foundation paired with its meaningful human impact. As a science-driven profession, it requires thoughtful clinical reasoning, evidence-based decision-making, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

At the same time, it offers the privilege of working with individuals across the lifespan who present with a wide range of communication strengths and needs. I am especially passionate about supporting diverse communicators, including those who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), and partnering with families, educators, and interdisciplinary teams to create inclusive, supportive environments.

I teach because I believe education shapes the future of our profession. Preparing students to bridge scientific knowledge with authentic practice is both a responsibility and a privilege. I am committed to developing clinicians who think critically, act ethically, and approach their work with confidence and purpose. Supporting students as they grow into professionals who can advocate, collaborate, and lead within educational settings is what makes teaching deeply meaningful to me.

My teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that rigorous academic preparation must be paired with reflection, mentorship, and real-world application. I value high standards, clear expectations, and constructive feedback, while fostering a collaborative learning environment where students feel supported and challenged. I strive to cultivate professional identity, leadership capacity, and a commitment to equitable service delivery.

I hope students leave my classes with confidence in their clinical decision-making, a strong sense of professional identity, and the skills to serve as leaders within educational communities. Particularly within the Educational Specialist program, I aim to prepare professionals who not only deliver high-quality services, but who also influence systems, advocate for students, and contribute meaningfully to their schools and districts.
