I am a teacher advocate and pose questions with teachers about how can schools support teacher expertise in the field of literacy and how can literacy instruction support skilled readers who have confidence and a strong sense of agency.
I love teaching because it is about creating conditions where students can learn, grow, and thrive. I view students as collaborators in the learning process. I enjoy working with students and sharing a love of teaching and all things literacy.
My teaching philosophy centers on a strength-based approach where I view students as knowledgeable meaning makers in the learning process.
I hope that students gain the knowledge and skills needed to be an effective and visionary teacher.
Margaret Vaughn is the Connally Family Distinguished Professor of Literacy Education at the University of Georgia. Vaughn was an elementary school educator and in 2025, she became an elected Board Member of the International Literacy Association. Her published titles include Accelerating Learning Recovery for All Students: Core Principles for Getting Literacy Growth Back on Track (Guilford Press), and Student agency in the classroom: Honoring student voice in the curriculum (Teachers College). She is passionate about working with teachers and students in schools.
