…there is no such thing as a ‘math person’—everybody can learn and do statistics, you just have to find the questions that you’re passionate about.

Assistant Professor

I teach because I enjoy working with students, witnessing and being a small part of their growth and development as scholars. Every student brings so much to the classroom with respect to their different areas of study, different research and life philosophies, different cultural identities and lived experiences. All these unique aspects of individuals student contribute to a diverse and open classroom environment where everyone feels valued and respected. I love when students become the teachers, and I get to sit back and learn.

The field of psychometrics blends so many disciplines: educational assessment, educational psychology, learning sciences, mathematics, statistics, programming, and more. Psychometrics is inherently an inter- and multidisciplinary field. I get to use my skills in these areas to do the research that I’m passionate about.

I hope that students gain confidence in doing statistics and learn that there is no such thing as a ‘math person’—everybody can learn and do statistics, you just have to find the questions that you’re passionate about. Then you’ll be motivated to learn methods that help you answer those questions. I hope they gain a broader perspective on research and data analysis. And I hope they learn to use all the tools available, qualitative and quantitative, to study the topics they are passionate about.

Outside of my research and teaching, I’m a sports junkie. I love to watch and play sports. My original love is basketball, but my latest addiction is playing golf. I’m not very good, but I enjoy being outside and have learned to appreciate the difficulty of the game.
