Llewellyn Cornelius: Yours in Service

Llewellyn Cornelius has dedicated his life to the service of others. Throughout his 30+ year career in social work and higher education, he has touched the lives of many, impacted numerous communities, and gained a long list of accomplishments along the way.

In January, Cornelius added to his list of awards, being recognized as the first UGA Social Work professor to be inducted into the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare. This achievement places him in the top 137 researchers in his field.

Historically, his research has focused on racial and ethnic health disparities, social determinants of health, and the development of change interventions. This year, Cornelius has centered his attention on the underserved – the area of the community the Online Master of Social Work was established to serve. One current project Cornelius is pursuing has set the goal of looking into water toxicity and pollution in rural Georgia. Through his work with this project, Cornelius has made a major impact on the lives of individuals from Glynn and MacIntosh counties.

For 30 years, Cornelius has signed his emails to students, faculty, peers and colleagues with “yours in service.” No matter what position he has held, or the number of awards he has earned, Cornelius has remained dedicated to his passion, the very thing that originally drew him to a career in service. The three words encompass his passion and dedication to those he serves daily with simplicity.

Llewellyn Cornelius teaches in the Master of Social Work Online program as well as the Campus-based program.
