Summer enrollment at UGA is reaching a record high this year and enrollment in online classes is a big part of it! Though the numbers are not final, approximately 15,500 students are enrolled in summer courses this year, according to UGA Vice President of Instruction, Rahul Shrivastav.

Because of the expansion of online programs and the addition of new online course options, summer enrollment has vastly grown. As Lee Shearer pointed out in the Athens Banner-Herald article, this change “meant students could go home for the summer or take a summer job in another town, yet still take some of their required UGA courses.”

In addition to that, students in online courses have the freedom to hold a full-time job or tend to other obligations throughout the day instead of having to be on campus in a physical classroom at a certain time.

Shrivastav estimates that about 8,000 students are in UGA summer online courses this year (it is important to note that this is not a headcount; some students take multiple online classes and are counted multiple times in the figure).  

“I think we had about a 6 percent gain last year and we should outdo that this year,” Shrivastav said.
