Summer Hanson Schedules an Online Business Degree into her Itinerary
When Summer Hanson was offered a job as a flight attendant with Delta Air Lines, she felt that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Fewer than one-tenth of one percent of applicants received an offer, and she was thrilled to be selected. However, Summer had a year of classes left in her campus-based program before completing her business degree, and she was concerned that a constantly on-the-move lifestyle would prevent her from earning her BBA.
“I wanted to finish my degree, but I didn’t want to turn down an amazing job opportunity. Enrolling in the University of Georgia’s online Bachelor of Business Administration program means I can finish school while starting my career at the same time,” said Summer.
The program’s flexibility allows Summer to successfully manage her course load while moving across multiple time zones on a daily basis. She said, “I do most of my work in my apartment in Brooklyn and in hotels during layovers, but I’ve been known to outline chapters in the airport or on the plane in between flights!”
Even though Summer spends her days in the skies, planning ahead allows her to keep her feet on the ground in order to stay academically on-track. “I have everything written out: due dates, tests, quizzes, everything. So when I’m getting my schedule for flights, I’m able to identify days I need to be off or on a layover. This allows me to stay on top of my school work,” she said. Summer also makes sure she turns in assignments ahead of time. “With all the different time zones, it’s hard to keep up with dates, and I don’t want to risk turning my work in late” she adds.
How does a flight attendant celebrate earning a business degree? Summer answers, “After graduation, I’m flying my family and boyfriend to Hawaii for a vacation!”
